Creating a Positive, Productive Classroom Environment

Motivation:

My students have diverse needs in motivation, as most groups do.  Some of my kids respond very well to gentle prodding, and some of them have to be called on directly to speak in class.  There are some classes that will not speak at all on a given topic without some coersion, and some of them have very productive conversations without much prodding.   I also have my students participate in group and whole phyical activities (i.e. football games, charades, relay races, all pertaining to the curriculum we are learning at the time).

Management:

Origianally, I let my students create their own class rules.  I helped them formulate the first couple, but my classes had no trouble creating the rest of their lists.  The class policies were thoughtful and deep as a general rule.  By the students creating their own class policies, they were given the opportunity to self police and correct.  I've had very few incidents of students blatantly disrupting my class by breaking the rules, and when I've had to pull small groups of students to the hall to find some kind of plan for future behavior improvement, the students themselves have formed groups to encourage each other to act better.

Technology:

In my classes, I utilize the Google Suite, an interactive whiteboard, a document camera, and apps on the students' smartphones to create presentations.  We have used computers, tablets, the Remind app, projectors, and much more.
